A Friend Like Gnome One Else

Grief is like the wake behind a boat. It starts out as a huge wave that follows close behind you and is big enough to swamp and drown you if you suddenly stop moving forward. But if you do keep moving, the big wake will eventually dissipate. And after a long time, the waters of your life get calm again, and that is when the memories of those have left begin to shine as bright and enduring as the stars above.  Jimmy Buffett

Thinking a lot about my beautiful mom this month!  September 23rd will mark the 2nd anniversary of her passing.  She was such a sweet soul, and I was so blessed to have her as my mom.  She suffered with Parkinson’s disease for over 20 years, but I rarely heard her complain.  One of our favorite jokes was that every time I’d see her I’d ask her, “What’s shaking?”.  She loved it.  She also loved anything kitschy – Betty Boop, anything that involved pig or chicken collectibles, and gnomes!  When I saw these gnome stamps from My Favorite things I had to have them.  I made this card to celebrate my mama, who would have loved the pun – For a Friend Like Gnome Other…love you Mom!

To make this card I assembled a box that is 5-1/2″ x 4-1/4″ x 1″ from Neenah Classic Crest Cover Solar White 110 pound card stock.

I cut an opening in the box top that is 3-1/4″ x 4-1/2″ (this is the exact inner dimension of the Die-Namics stitched rectangle die cut I used to frame the opening). I used two pieces of very heavy acetate – one to form the window in the the box top, and the other was layered 1/2″ from the bottom of the box (I used six layers of foam tape cut 1/4″ wide).  This gave me the opportunity to essentially “float” the flowers (from the Sensational Stitched Flowers Card Kit) in the middle of the card. This also meant they were very easy to arrange.  One important thing to remember is that you will need to leave room to slide the box bottom into the box top.  So don’t butt the foam tape up against the sides of the box top – you need to leave a small space for the sides of the bottom to slide in.

The flowers were die cut from various colors of the My Favorite Things card stock.  They have a beautiful array of colors and the card stock is very high quality. The sentiment was stamped on the My Favorite Things card stock.

In the bottom of the box I added a piece of polka dot paper from My Favorite Things Sweet Celebration 6 x 6 paper pack.

The gnomes were stamped on white card stock and colored with Copic Markers  I wanted them to look like they were popping out of the flowers! They were mounted about 1/4″ off the bottom of the box using foam tape. This gives the whole scene great dimension as everything is about 1/4″ – 1/2″ apart. I also added some round enamel dots to the center of the flowers, and used some Wink of Stella on the gnome’s hats, although it’s hard to see in the picture.

To mail this I would either make a box envelope out heavy card stock or use a media mailer.

And I’m entering this card in the MFT Superstar Card Contest!  Here’s the link if you want to join the fun: http://www.mftstamps.com/blog/theres-still-time-to-enter-our-card-contest-2/

Thanks so much for stopping by!
